A requirement for health, hygiene and safety requirements, many businesses are required by law to install an electric fly killer.

Food Hygiene regulations 2006 state that all premises that manufacture, produce, store and cook food must have certain fly control solutions in place, including an electric fly killer, a fly door chain and fly screens over any open windows. The legislation covers a range of topics from appropriate lighting in the premises, clean and well-maintained equipment, appropriate and safe clothing for staff and appropriate pest control measures including rodent control, cockroach control and fly control measures.

Which Electric Fly Killer Should I Buy?

We offer the two main types of electric fly killer.

Electric Fly Zappers

A traditional electric fly killer uses UV bulbs to attract the flies towards an electronically charged killing grid. The fly is killed (or stunned if the grid is of poor quality) and falls into a catch tray fitted to the bottom of the unit. These are the most popular types of machines.

Glueboard Electric Fly Killers

A glueboard fly killer is commonly found in food premises, the flies are lured to the unit and instead of being zapped (which can send parts of the fly flying away from the machine) the flies are captured on a large surface area sticky glueboard silently. This avoids the cross contamination risk of parts of flies bodies landing where they should not, but also avoids the nasty noise or zap every time a fly is killed, which can be hugely off-putting to customers.

We would always recommend a Glueboard electric fly killer if your premises is involved in the catering/food industry, from food preparation through to cooking and serving food. If you need a fly killer for front of house/customer facing areas, a glueboard model is the ideal choice especially the decorative models as these can blend in with modern light features.

LED-UVA Bulbs.

Recent energy efficiency regulations have also changed the type of bulbs found in fly killers. Efficient LED tubes are now being used, increasing the lifetime of the bulbs vs traditional UV models which often required the bulbs to be replaced every 3 months. The LED based bulbs produce UV-A light as intense beams of light which are more attractive to flies than standard light sources.

Installation Methods

We always recommend installing the machines at a minimum height of 1.8m and ideally either ceiling suspended, or wall mounted high on a wall. The machine should be placed in an optimum area where there is shade and not much direct light entering the building, as this will distract/compete with the flies attention against the fly killer and may impact the fly capturing efficacy of the machine.

Leading Manufacturers

We work with all the leading electric fly killer manufacturers and our machines offer impressive warranty periods of up to 5 years. We also stock every replacement glueboard type and every type of LED bulb, so that you are always guaranteed the correct supply of parts to keep the fly killer working in the long term, and are never left with a redundant machine.
